(Reuters) – The International Paralympic Committee will meet on Wednesday to discuss Russia ahead of the Beijing Winter Olympics this week, as athletes from Ukraine and other countries urge the Olympic Committee to International (IOC) and IPC suspend Russia and Belarus.

Calls to ban Russia from sport in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine grew louder after athletes wrote an open letter to IOC President Thomas Bach and IPC director Andrew Parsons, calling on the authorities to suspend Russia and Belarus and banned their athletes from the events immediately.

The IPC said it would discuss Russia during a board meeting on Wednesday, two days before the start of the March 4-13 Paralympics.

“The IPC Council when discussing this issue at Wednesday’s Council meeting will focus on the IPC Constitution and the rules of the IPC handbook,” the IPC told Reuters in a statement on Monday.

“Wednesday is the earliest possible meeting with Board members in transit from around the world to Beijing.”

About 650 athletes from 49 national paralympic committees, including Russians, will take part.

The IOC has said international sports federations should move or cancel sporting events currently planned in Russia or Belarus, while the IOC executive said Russian and Belarusian flags should not be displayed. presented at international sporting events.

Ukraine’s Health Ministry on Sunday said 352 civilians, including 14 children, have been killed since Russia invaded the country last week. Belarus was a major staging area for the invasion.

Russia calls its actions in Ukraine a “special operation”.

Earlier, Germany’s elite athletes group said a complete ban on all Russian sports bodies, athletes and officials as well as events in the country was a necessary response to the Russia invades Ukraine.
