With the Overwatch 2 beta right around the corner, the original game has seen an influx of new players gearing up for the sequel.
The Overwatch 2 beta is finally set to kick off in late April 2022 after what veteran gamers have been waiting for what seems like a lifetime.
However, a lot of new players are also downloading Overwatch to prepare and this has resulted in a massive increase in the size of the player base.
New players flood Overwatch ahead of the sequel’s beta
Blizzard doesn’t share exact player counts with the public, but there are some signs that Overwatch is adding more and more new players.
The first is the game’s subreddit, which ranked in the top 5 growing gaming communities on Reddit for the week of April 11th. This led to a post on the sub asking why, which a new player says was due to Overwatch 2.
But the new gaming hype might not be the whole story. Anyone who’s loaded Overwatch since the start of the Remix Event has probably noticed new bronze borders all over the place.
Recently some Hololive VTubers had a great time streaming Overwatch and introducing the game to a whole new audience as well.
All of these factors combine to create an almost perfect storm of new players downloading Overwatch. That’s not to say some of them are returning after years of being absent, but there’s no denying that there are plenty of brand new accounts as well.
So while there’s been a lot of talk and speculation surrounding Overwatch 2, this massive addition shows that there’s a lot of hype surrounding the title. Now we just have to see if it continues after the beta or not.
