Oscars 2022 red carpet: Jamie Lee Curtis, Benedict Cumberbatch, Diane Warren show solidarity with Ukraine, pins, ribbons

LOS ANGELES — Even as the cheering mood swelled outside the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon, some stars attending the 94th Academy Awards clearly had their hearts and minds on Ukraine.

After two years, the red carpets returned to the Dolby along with the pomp and circumstance of Hollywood’s biggest night, but one of the biggest challenges comes Sunday, which is grabbing global attention for a night of self-adulation as Russia’s war ravages Ukraine.

As producers vowed a solemn and respectful acknowledgment of the war during Sunday’s broadcast, celebrities took to the red carpet to express their support for the war-torn nation and its citizens.

‘The Power of the Dog’ star Benedict Cumberbatch expressed his solidarity with the people of Ukraine while expressing his horror at the images he had seen of the conflict.

“It’s horrific,” Cumberbatch said. “What I want to call myself a citizen of the world, but also a father and a person, to see children being buried under the rubble of theaters, to see pregnant women being hurt in maternity wards, I just, you know, it’s hard to believe it’s happening.”

Several actors lobbied the academy to have Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy speak at the ceremony, with Sean Penn vowing to destroy his Oscar if the invitation was not renewed.

Jamie Lee Curtis wore a band as a ring in Ukrainian blue dressed in a midnight blue look by animal rights activist Stella McCartney.

Nicholas Britell, nominated for his Don’t Look Up score, wore a blue lapel ribbon in support of Ukraine, and Diane Warren, in an emerald green tuxedo, wore his own blue lapel ribbon on behalf of the Ukrainian refugees. Others also wore Ukrainian blue ribbons.

Presenter Lily James, on the other hand, wore Versace in baby pink with a high side slit and Piaget jewels as she posed for selfies with a few fans on the red carpet. Soft pastels like her outfit mixed with metallic looks (Lupita Nyong’o in gold Prada) and black statements in a year still grappling with the pandemic and the horrors of the Russian war in Ukraine.

The conflict entered its 33rd day on Sunday after Russia launched a wide-ranging attack on Ukraine on February 24.
