Oscars 2022: Fans felt ‘very upset’ after Ryusuke cut off Hamaguchi during acceptance speech

Fans were “very upset” at the Oscars after Japanese director Ryusuke Hamaguchi was kicked out during his acceptance speech for the Best International Feature Film award.

Hamaguchi won the category for his critically acclaimed film drive my car which, in addition to films, is also nominated for the Oscar for best film Liquorice Pizza (Paul Thomas Anderson) Belfast (Kenneth Branagh) and The power of the dog (Jane Campion).

Hamaguchi and his drama are also nominated for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay Oscars this year.

When drive my car Best Film wins, it becomes the second non-English language film thereafter parasite (2020) to ever be recognized by the Academy in the category.

While accepting the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film, Hamaguchi thanked his various collaborators, cast and distributors for the film before the band, led by Travis Barker, interrupted the director mid-speech.

However, Hamaguchi protested on stage and indicated that he wasn’t done before speaking for a few more moments.

Fans reacted to the alleged snub, writing that it “really, really sucks” that the Oscars “didn’t respect” the director at the ceremony.

Journalist Esther Zuckerman wrote in capital letters: “TRAVIS BARKER DOES NOT PLAY RYUSUKE HAMAGUCHI OUT, HOW DARE YOU?”

One social media user tweeted, “The disrespect towards Ryusuke Hamaguchi…cutting him off twice and kicking him off the stage. Very annoyed.”

Another slammed the Oscars’ perceived diversity push with a tweet that read, “I don’t want another awards show talking about how they value diversity after cutting off Ryusuke Hamaguchi 15 seconds into his speech.”

The Academy Awards have often been condemned for the lack of representation of black actors and directors, LGBT+ talent and women in Hollywood.

Another Twitter user wrote, “Really sucks they outplayed Ryusuke Hamaguchi twice when DRIVE MY CAR is all the Oscars should be aiming for.”

One fan said he had “insane respect” for the best director contender having had enough time to thank everyone on his list, writing: “[The] The second best part of the show so far is Ryusuke Hamaguchi, who managed to convince the playoff music to stop while thanking more people in his acceptance speech. He almost made her stop doing it a third time!”
