Oscar Isaac jokes about being seen as “racially ambiguous” on Saturday Night Live

Oscar Isaac moderated Saturday night live for the first time tonight (March 5), using part of his opening monologue to poke fun at how he is viewed by casting directors.

“I’m half Guatemalan, half Cuban — or, as casting directors call it, ‘racially ambiguous,'” he said. “They say I can play anything from a pharaoh to Timothée Chalamet’s father.”

He also pointed out that his full name is Oscar Isaac Hernández Estrada. “I said to Hollywood, ‘You can take your pick of two of these names,'” he joked. “Guess what they took? The whites.”

Isaac warmed to his subject, adding that in the traditional joke format about a priest, a rabbi, and a minister walking into a bar, “I could play anyone in this joke.”

Isaac spent much of his monologue time performing clips from a home video he made with a childhood friend when he was 10 years old.

He said that he will “join the Marvel Universe” in the upcoming miniseries moon knight represented “a sort of full-circle moment,” as his first film had been titled The Avenger.

“Not The Avengers, that was a huge blockbuster,” he clarified. “No no. That was The Avenger, which is a film I wrote, directed and starred in when I was 10 years old. It was filmed on location in my buddy Bruce Ferguson’s backyard in our hometown of Miami, Florida. I play a ninja assassin training to fight his nemesis.”

Isaac showed various clips of himself as a young aspiring actor and praised his apparent commitment from a young age. In one scene he licked clean a bloody sword.

“Now you might be wondering, Oscar, why are you using your monologue to show us old home videos?” he concluded. “And the reason is that it’s important to encourage kids to be crazy. Because every once in a while, one of these weirdos becomes the host SNL.”

The evening’s musical guest was Charli XCX, who was originally scheduled to perform Saturday night live back on December 18th, before this episode hosted by Paul Rudd was drastically scaled down due to the surge in the Omicron variant of the Covid-19 pandemic.

XCX also appeared in a sketch, playing a singing meatball.
