One of Britain’s most wanted men has been arrested trying to flee Portugal using a fake passport

One of Britain’s most wanted men has been arrested after trying to fly there Portugal with a fake passport.

Alex Male, 29, out Weston-super-Mare in Somerset, said to have been a regional distributor of Class A drugs in South West England. He allegedly bought and sold the drugs over an encrypted EncroChat communications network.

That National Criminal Investigation Agency (NCA) said his arrest was a “fantastic result”.

Mr Male was taken into custody Lisbon Airport on Saturday after arriving on a flight out Turkey where, according to the NCA, he had been refused entry.

Detectives added Mr Male to their most wanted notice in January. He is charged with conspiracy to supply cocaine and ketamine, money laundering and conspiracy to acquire a firearm as part of drug trafficking.

NCA international liaison officer Phil Robinson said: “The man naively believed he could travel across international borders with fraudulent documents and go undetected by law enforcement.

“But he underestimated the vigilance and expertise of the Turkish border police, which enabled the Portuguese authorities to act.

“Each arrest of a fugitive is a fantastic achievement, especially as Male was recently added to our Most Wanted list.

“He is wanted in connection with dangerous crimes that are having a devastating impact on communities, so I’m pleased he was caught.

“We continue to work with our international partners to close the net around refugees, no matter where they are.”

Mr Male had been on the run after failing to comply with bail restrictions imposed after his arrest.

He was previously on the run in Spain’s Marbella region before moving to Portugal.

He remains in custody and is now facing extradition proceedings.

South West Regional Organized Crime Unit (SW ROCU) Detective Inspector Adrian Hawkins said: “Male is now being brought back into the UK criminal justice system to face the charges he ran from.

“This is an example of how international law enforcement agencies are working together to ensure justice is done and to demonstrate that there is no such thing as a safe place to hide.” One of Britain’s most wanted men has been arrested trying to flee Portugal using a fake passport
