THOUSANDS of struggling households can get help with food costs and energy bills – but they need to act fast.
ONE £500m cash for bold Britons are being put forward by local councils and some have application deadlines in just a few weeks.
Money from the Household Assistance Fund is designed to help those in need cover the cost of winter essentials.
It comes as millions of people face increasing costs of living, including rising energy costs.
Inflation has hit a 30-year highspiked to 5.4%, the most recent figures showing that household budgets are under pressure.
Each local council will hand out the cash in different ways and until March 31 – but some areas have an earlier deadline.
For example, you will want to apply sooner rather than later if you are in North Yorkshire when the program ends on 28 February.
There, local residents can receive payments of up to £275 if they have received council tax help and have a child living under 16 at home.
Anyone who is eligible must be sent a letter by North Yorkshire council with a code needed to ask for help online.
But if you think you are eligible and don’t have anything in the post, you can fill out the online application form and select the ‘I lost my letter’ option.
Payments in the form of electronic vouchers can be used at supermarkets to purchase essentials such as food and clothing.
Supermarkets you can use include Aldi, Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury’s.
Other councils have different eligibility criteria and amounts they offer, so you’ll need to check with your local authority what you can get.
You can do this by finding your local council using search engine on gov.uk – just enter your postcode.
Residents of Wealden in East Sussex can apply for a one-time payment of £250 to pay off your energy and water bill debts.
Meanwhile, Barnsley families can sign up supermarket vouchers worth up to £200.
Some councils may also close the program earlier than scheduled if there is high need because of limited cash resources.
So it’s best to check now what you might get or you might miss out on.
Unfortunately, the program may have been closed in some regions, but there may still be other help you can get.
For example, the application deadline in Elmbridge, Surrey is closed today.
But the council and others also provide funds year-round through welfare assistance programs and emergency funds.
Again, the amount you can get and who is eligible will vary by location, and You can check out our instructions on how to sign up.
You can also get a discount on your council tax bill In some cases, or 100% off, means you won’t have to pay anything.
