Olivia Colman Really Cried During Heartstopper’s Emotional Rehearsal, Says Star Kit Connor


Olivia Colman broke down in tears during a rehearsal for the film heart stoppersaid actor Kit Connor.

The Oscar winner stars in the recently released show, a coming-of-age story that follows a teenage romance between Nick (Connor) and Charlie (Joe Locke). Colman plays Nick’s mother.

Since its April 22 release, the show has garnered near-universal praise from fans for its portrayal of coming out and LGBT+ romance.

At a performance on This morningConnor said that Colman was so moved by a scene that the actor actually cried during rehearsals.

The scene in question takes place in the final episode, in which Nick comes out as bisexual to his mother.

“We usually read it about 50 percent before each scene, you don’t go 100 percent of the way,” he said. “We read it through and suddenly Olivia started crying.”

The 18-year-old told hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield: “At first I was like, ‘God, she’s just really good, I need to up my game massively here’, so I was really worried at that point.

“I think other people told me afterwards that it was because it’s such a beautifully written scene and such a crucial part of so many people’s lives. I think it really touched her.”

Speaking of what it was like to work with him prodigal daughter Star, Connor joked: “I was just scared to be honest.”

He went on to describe Colman as “the most absolutely loveable person in the world.”

heart stopper‘s screenwriter Alice Oseman previously said she was “shocked” that the series managed to get Colman on board for the small role.

In the week following its release, many viewers on social media spoke out about the same scene, calling it “relatable.”
