NYC Rep. Ritchie Torres calls for an end to Russian “espionage” in the Bronx

Bronx Rep. Ritchie Torres on Tuesday called on the FBI to investigate the secret Russian compound in Riverdale, saying his district refuses to have “spying in our own backyard.”

Torres, a newly minted Democrat, sent a letter first received by The Post to the FBI, the CIA, the Department of Homeland Security and Attorney General Merrick Garland, urging them to investigate whether the covert compound is harboring spies working on the job of the Kremlin work.

Outside the gates of the 20-story Soviet-era skyscraper at 355 W. 255th St. in the Bronx, Torres said Tuesday that “espionage must be exposed wherever it exists and driven out wherever it is uncovered.” The internal security of the United States depends on it.”

“Given what is happening in the world, we in the Bronx can no longer afford for Vladimir Putin’s war crimes to support and encourage espionage in our own backyard,” he continued.

While the Bronx building is home to a few Russian diplomats, rumors have circulated for years that it also houses Russian intelligence officers.

Torres doesn’t think the white building hiding in plain sight has ever been examined: “To my knowledge and to my amazement, the complex has stood here since the 1970s and I am not aware of any request for an actual investigation of these spy reports.” These reports have been leaking out for a long time.”

The site, which stands out in the leafy residential neighborhood of Riverdale in the Bronx, came under renewed scrutiny following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Local residents gathered outside the site earlier this month to protest the invasion and call for an end to the war.

Avi Weiss, a prominent rabbi who led a large congregation in Riverdale until his retirement, came to the press to show his support for Torres’ request.

“If you work for the Hitlers of the world, then you are guilty. And here we are in front of this place where Russian diplomats reside. In my view, if our President Joe Biden called Vladimir Putin a war criminal, that means that everyone in this building, a diplomat working for a war criminal, is an accomplice, equally guilty,” he said.

“I have lived in this community for 50 years. I have protested hundreds of times in front of this building,” the rabbi added, saying he was even arrested in front of the building.
