NY AG Letitia James is suing Donald Trump, children and businesses

New York Attorney General Letitia James on Wednesday filed a $250 million lawsuit against former President Donald Trump, his children Eric, Ivanka and Donald Trump Jr. and the Trump Organization — over alleged “harrowing” real estate fraud the family.

The 220-page lawsuit, filed in Manhattan Supreme Court, is the culmination of a three-year investigation by the Democratic Office to determine whether the Trump Org’s assets were inflated for credit, insurance and tax purposes.

“Donald Trump falsely inflated his net worth by billions of dollars to unfairly enrich himself and defraud the system, thereby defrauding us all,” James said at a news conference announcing the lawsuit.

“Claiming you have money you don’t have isn’t ‘the art of the deal’, it’s the art of stealing,” she said, referring to Trump’s 1987 book.

The filing, which also names former Trump Organization chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg, alleges that the defendants were “involved in numerous acts of fraud and misrepresentation in the preparation of Mr. Trump’s annual financial reports … covering at least 2011.” cover until 2021″.

James launched an investigation into the company in 2019 after Trump’s former personal attorney, Michael Cohen, told Congress that Trump had exaggerated the company’s assets for tax, insurance and credit purposes.

The AG then filed suit in 2020, claiming the Trump Organization and Eric Trump were blocking their investigation.

Trump and the other two of his three eldest children, Ivanka and Donald Trump Jr., have since been added to the case, in which the bureau sought to enforce subpoenas for records and testimony from family members and company employees. All three of his children were executives in the company.

Trump, Ivanka and Don Jr. fought to appear for testimony but ultimately lost that court battle, and Trump testified at AG testimony last month, where he declined to answer questions, citing his rights under the fifth amendment.

Wednesday’s lawsuit comes after the AG rejected at least one offer from Trump’s camp to settle the case.

“We have rejected settlement offers that they have submitted and our doors are always open,” James said on Wednesday.

She added that her office is also referring the case to the Internal Revenue Service and federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York.

In a statement, Trump attorney Alina Habba told The Post that the lawsuit “does not focus on the facts or the law, but is solely focused on advancing the Attorney General’s political agenda.”

“It is quite clear that the Attorney General’s Office has exceeded its statutory powers by investigating transactions in which absolutely no wrongdoing took place,” she said. “We are confident that our justice system will not condone this uncontrolled abuse of office, and we look forward to defending our client against every single unsubstantiated claim made by the Attorney General.”

Trump faces more legal troubles following the Aug. 8 raid at Florida’s Mar-a-Lago resort as the FBI investigates whether Trump unlawfully hid classified documents there. He claims the documents were declassified before he took them there.

Trump attorneys were in federal court in Brooklyn on Tuesday as Judge Raymond Dearie, the court-appointed special master, works to determine which of the 11,000 seized documents could fall under attorney privilege or executive privilege.

The Trump Organization is on trial next month on tax fraud charges, where Weisselberg is scheduled to testify against the company as part of a plea deal he finalized with Manhattan DAs last month.

The company is accused of helping top executives avoid income taxes by downplaying their pay to the government for 15 years. Trump is not personally accused in the case.

If convicted, the company could face fines and be forced to reform its business practices.
