Nurse shoots and kills herself on duty in hospital emergency room


An investigation is underway in California into a nurse She reportedly committed suicide while working in a hospital emergency room, police said.

Santa Clara Police said they responded to a call about a self-inflicted gunshot wound at Kaiser’s Santa Clara Medical Center in Santa Clara around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Chronicle of San Francisco reported.

An unidentified nurse was found to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Corresponding NBC Bay areashe was halfway through her shift at the hospital when the incident occurred.

Officials did not cordon off the hospital, reports said shoot happened in an isolated room near the emergency room, Deputy Police Chief Wahid Kazem said on Friday.

No other staff or patients were threatened and hospital treatments continued Wednesday night after the incident, Mr Kazem added.

However, ambulances were temporarily diverted to nearby hospitals and patients were still being admitted during the initial police response.

“Our hearts go out to the family, friends and co-workers affected by this terrible loss,” said Dr. Rakesh Chaudhary, chief physician at Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara Medical Center, in a statement.

“Our teams are on the ground providing emotional support and resources to employees,” he continued. “We are grateful to our staff and physicians, who responded promptly, and for the compassionate support our Santa Clara team receives from colleagues at Kaiser Permanente and other healthcare systems.”

What led to the shooting is still unclear. The Independent has reached out to the Santa Clara Police Department for comment.
