HARTFORD, Conn (AP) – RJ Cole scored 25 points and No. 17 UConn survived a challenge from the Maryland-Eastern Shore to a 72-63 win on Tuesday night.
Tyler Polley added 14 points to the Huskies (7-1), who climbed five places in the AP Top 25 after third place showed up over the holiday weekend in the Battle of Atlantis.
UConn was slow for much of the night before UMES, which entered as 33 points behind, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
The Huskies took a 39-31 lead at halftime, but failed to score in the first four minutes of the second half, leaving them 42-41 ahead of Da’Shawn Phillip.
That’s as close as the Hawks (2-5) have gotten.
A trick from freshman Jordan Hawkins from a missed free-throw helped UConn in the 14-5 streak extend their lead to 11 points.
UMES had another run, taking the lead 66-62 in a back jump by Chace Davis, but the Huskies kept going.
The Hawks beat UConn throughout the first half by hitting 12 of their 24 shots from the floor and overtaking the Huskies 14-11.
But UMES took the lead only twice, with a score of 11-9 over 3 points by Zion Styles and 15-14 after being scored by Donchevell Nugent.
Tyler Polley’s treble just before the opening whistle sent UConn into the dressing room with a 39-31 lead.
Phillip and Mike Mensah each had 12 points and Styles added 11 points for UMES.
Maryland-Eastern Shore: UMES, with no player taller than 6 foot-5, was overtaken by UConn by just 33-30.
UConn: The Huskies played without guard Tyrese Martin, who was resting on the left wrist he sprained during their win over Auburn in the Bahamas. Center-back Adam Sanogo (eight points) left the game in the second half and entered the dressing room with the coach.
Maryland-Eastern Shore: The Hawks wraps up the five-game trip with a visit to Lehigh on Saturday.
UConn: Huskies return to campus on Saturday to host Grambling.
