Robert Eggers has explained the rationale for using CGI genitals in his new film: The Northman.
The violent historical epic stars Alexander Skarsgård as a Viking prince named Amleth on a quest for revenge for his father.
Some fight scenes feature characters fighting in the nude or minimally clad.
In a red carpet interview, Eggers confirmed that Skarsgård and his co-star Claes Bang added computer-generated imagery to their bodies to avoid accidental injuries.
“They actually had to add things digitally because they wore straps because nobody wanted their pieces chopped off,” he said The Hollywood Reporter.
“So for certain shots we actually had to add some CG genitals so they didn’t look too Ken dolly.”
The film also stars Bjork, Nicole Kidman and Anya Taylor-Joy. In conversation with The Independent Earlier this month, Eggers explained that his enthusiasm for Viking culture began after a visit to Iceland in 2016.
“It was unlike anything else I had seen,” he said. “The grandeur, the antiquity, the otherworldliness… It was the most powerful experience ever.
“And it’s terribly embarrassing to say, but I felt like the Norse gods were really there.”
