North Korea is reportedly launching a new tactical guided missile

North Korea has successfully tested a new tactical guided missile, raising fears President Kim Jong Un, who witnessed the launch, is focused on boosting the country’s nuclear capabilities

The development comes as North Korea conducted the launch of an ICBM late last month – it was the first time since November 2017 – and could indicate the Hermit Kingdom is ready to resume nuclear testing, South Korean and US officials said

The Korean Central News Agency, North Korea’s media mouthpiece, did not say when the launch occurred but noted that it was linked to the country’s nuclear goals.

“The novel tactical guided missile system … is of great importance in drastically improving the firepower of long-range front-line artillery units and increasing the efficiency of tactical nuclear weapons operation,” KCNA said.

It added that Kim “has provided important instructions on the continued build-up of the country’s defense capabilities and nuclear combat forces.”

The South Korean military said it spotted two rockets fired near North Korea’s east coast on Saturday.

They traveled about 70 miles and climbed up to 15 miles while reaching speeds of less than Mach 4, or four times the speed of sound.

South Korea said the missiles were likely short-range.

The missiles appear to be North Korea’s first tactical nuclear weapons delivery system, Ankit Panda, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, told Reuters.

“You don’t have to be particularly imaginative to put two and two together,” Panda told the news agency.

Kim led a huge parade in Pyongyang on Friday to mark the 110th anniversary of the birth of his grandfather Kim Il Sung, who founded North Korea.

The North Korean despot notably did not tout his country’s military might at the event, or without a parade to display his weapons.

But another celebration is planned for April 25 in Pyongyang, which could include a military parade.
