NJ man Jerry Rosado was charged with sexually assaulting Susan Negersmith in 1990

A man has been arrested for sexually assaulting a woman whose body was found partially clothed near dumpsters behind a Wildwood restaurant in a murder 32 years ago.

Jerry Rosado, 62, of Melville, was arrested Friday for sexually assaulting then 20-year-old Susan Negersmith, whose remains were found in the town of Jersey Shore in May 1990, Cape May County prosecutors said in a news release .

Rosado could file additional charges as the investigation progresses, prosecutors said.

Negersmith, from Carmel, New York, was vacationing with her friends in the coastal town over Memorial Day weekend. An autopsy revealed that she had been the victim of sexual assault.

The cold case was finally cracked after new technology allowed law enforcement to match a DNA sample found on Negersmith’s body to Rosado after decades of comparing the sample to people of interest with negative results, prosecutors said.

“Countless law enforcement officials and prosecutors have worked to solve this case over the past thirty-two years, and their collective dedicated effort coupled with improvements in DNA technology and genetic genealogy analysis has led to this long-overdue arrest,” Cape said May County Attorney Jeffrey H. Sutherland said in a statement.

Rosado faces second-degree sexual assault charges. If convicted, he faces up to ten years in prison.
