Newt Gingrich warns of civil collapse over rising crime

Former Speaker of the Republican House of Representatives Newt Gingrich warned that “civilization will collapse” if crime rates continue to rise in major cities across the country and prosecutors fail to enforce the law.

“When you have the level of crime that you have in New York or Chicago or in Atlanta, suddenly you start realizing that we have to do something,” Gingrich John Catsimatidis said on his WABC 770 AM radio show in an interview that aired Sunday, while also citing rising murder rates in New Orleans and Philadelphia.

“People will start to realize that you have to change prosecutors, hire enough cops and enforce the law,” said the Republican from Georgia. “Otherwise civilization will collapse.”

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner have come under fire for adopting criminal justice reforms amid rising crime in their cities.

The major crime rate in the Big Apple is up 35.6% year over year in the past three months, with robberies, burglaries, grand theft and auto theft all up, according to NYPD figures.

Mayor Eric Adams and other elected officials, particularly Republicans, have called for an end to controversial bail reform laws that create a revolving door for offenders in the court system.

As of September 17, Philadelphia recorded 387 homicides, putting it on track to surpass the 562 for all of 2021, according to the Philadelphia Police Department.

Gingrich, who served as Speaker of the House from 1995 to 1999, said criminals in these cities benefit from a lax legal system.

“If you’re a criminal in Philadelphia, you love the current district attorney. If you’re a Manhattan criminal, you’ll love the current District Attorney. They want to vote for him, campaign for him, help fund him,” he said.

“We should not underestimate how much of it [represents] remarkable growth of a … informal economy made up of people who only make money from illegal activities.” Newt Gingrich warns of civil collapse over rising crime
