Officers gave first aid and CPR to the victim, but he died at the scene.

At this time, it is not clear whether the victim is a student or not.

Police have yet to make an arrest, but Newport News Sheriff Steve Drew said there are many people investigators are talking to.

Authorities said they did not have any suspicious information to disclose.

The school gym was packed for a men’s and women’s basketball pair between Menchville and the woods.

Drew said detectives will handle the crime scene once the game participants can leave the school grounds.

“Two things happen at the same time as we work with schools and they make plans for tomorrow,” Drew said.

Earlier this year, a student was charged after shooting two classmates at Heritage High School, also reported in Newport News.

The district has put in place additional safety measures at the school, including a resource officer, random searches, and the use of metal detectors.
