Police evacuated part of Newark Airport on the 21st anniversary of the September 11 attacks and delayed numerous flights on Sunday due to “reports of a suspicious package,” Port Authority officials said.
Police officers “immediately” cleared the lower level of Terminal C “as a precautionary measure” upon learning of the package around 12:45 p.m., officials said.
The floor reopened at 1:45 p.m., but FAA officials did not allow flights back into the airport until after 2:30 p.m. The disruption caused at least 59 flight delays, officials said.
Nervous leaflets took to social media to express their confusion at what was happening.
“America is stuck in lockdown at Newark Airport on the most tragic day in our recent history with no notification to frightened travelers,” wrote a frustrated flyer on Twitter.
Another traveler said she felt “trapped.
“Everyone knows what goes on at a Newark airport [that’s] which led to a security lockdown and essentially locked us all in Levels 1 and 2 of Terminal C [and] missed flights?”, the user Sloopyy, tweeted.
