A man has been arrested for allegedly killing his girlfriend – who was found dead with her throat cut on Friday after telling relatives she was afraid of her boyfriend, police said.
Nashan Walsh, 35, was picked up by police on Saturday and charged with the murder of mother-of-two Bjana James, 37, who police said was found by her brother with the fatal knife wound at their apartment in the Bronx’s Betances Houses.
Relatives who gathered outside James’ home for a vigil on Saturday revealed to the Post that the woman who was killed told a family member earlier in the week that her boyfriend was acting strangely and that she feared for her life.
James stopped replying to messages on Wednesday night, the relatives said.
It wasn’t immediately clear if Walsh is the friend the relative was referring to.
“She basically texted her [relative] the day it happened: ‘I’m scared. he will kill me I’m afraid for my life. He’s breaking out,'” a cousin, who gave her name Shelly, told The Post.
“He left the house. She wrote back… ‘He’s here, he’s back,’ and since then she wrote that we haven’t heard from her.”
On Friday, concerned family members decided to go to James’ apartment – which was left open. Her brother spotted the grisly scene.
An NYPD spokesman said there were no signs of a break-in or robbery.
“I didn’t know she was in a domestic abuse relationship,” her mother, Stacey James, told the Post. “I noticed a change in her when they got together. She wouldn’t come to see the baby that often.”
James is survived by a 12-year-old son and an eight-year-old daughter who were living with their maternal grandmother at the time of her death.
