New York Yankees broadcaster Suzyn Waldman, a pioneer in sports

NEW YORK — You’ll hear her on the shows of the New York Yankees — a pioneer as the third woman in MLB history to serve as a full-time dressing room commentator.

Suzyn Waldman’s broadcasting career has spanned more than three decades. Waldman is a pioneer in the industry, opening the door to the sport for many women.

Her sports career was not what she originally intended. She was an accomplished performer on stage.

“The music changed and I had to do something different with my life. The only other thing I knew was sports,” Waldman said. “When I was out with shows, I went to ball games. That’s where I got in by singing the national anthem for free.”

After putting together an audition tape for a sports update, Waldman was hired by WFAN radio to debut in 1987 and was the first voice to be heard on the station.

It was groundbreaking, but some weren’t ready for it.

“I don’t think I ever really considered it blazing a trail, but it came about because I really didn’t want anyone else to ever have to go through that,” she said. “Those were the days of snail mail. I got used condoms and faeces in the mail. Just awful stuff.”

How did she find the strength to persevere?

“You’re getting scared,” she said. “You also tell yourself this is ridiculous. Nobody is going to stop me. I have something to contribute and I’m not a cookie cutter and I’m not like everyone else.”

She says we’ve come a long way – but there’s more to do.

“I’m waiting for the day when people turn on the radio and they don’t say there’s a woman,” she said. “We should be background noise.”
