New York Liberty will be the first WNBA team to offer NFTs

The New York Liberty announced that they would become the first team in WNBA history to drop non-fungible tokens in the form of digital art.

The release of the NFT will take place on May 7th, coinciding with the season opener of the Liberty against the Connecticut Sun.

“I think we always strive to be innovative. We love to lead and believe we should lead here in New York,” Liberty CEO Keia Clarke said after training earlier this week. “We have ownership support and a truly unique idea to continue what our planned release has been.”

There will be 400 NFTs with similar designs, but each will have its own unique serial number when released. The Liberty hope to do more of the same as the season progresses.

“This is the first in the collection, I’m not sure what the rest will be like yet,” Clarke said. “There will be some surprises coming from this drop. The NFTs are serialized, you could gift the number of the NFT you buy.”

Fans can get one of the NFTs by pre-booking a ticket for the opening game through a dedicated website.

Created by Liberty’s in-house marketing team, the design plays with the nail art teased in the release of the franchise’s schedule.

“NFTs are the future of one-of-a-kind collectibles, and this exclusive drop celebrates the intersection of nail art culture and sport through the lens of New York Liberty. A lot of our players are getting their nails done,” Clarke said. “We saw Betnijah (Laney) get her nails done in New York Liberty colors.”

The WNBA offered its first NFTs last fall, and the packs provided by the league all sold out.
