Police sergeants in a suburban Westchester County department are having to retake tests that would put them in line for a promotion after allegations of possible fraud.
Seven sergeants in the Harrison Police Department were told this week they would have to retake the lieutenant’s exam after complaints emerged that sparked an investigation by the district attorney’s office.
The prosecutor’s office found in May that the allegations were “baseless,” a spokesman said — but the New York State Department of Civil Service ordered a retest on the same allegations.
“Following the October 2021 High Security Police Promotion exam, the department learned that some of the candidates may have violated the department’s exam standards, calling into question the integrity of the exam,” DCS said in a statement to The Post.
“Based on the information provided, the Department has determined that Westchester County should retest candidates who sat the Harrison fall exam to ensure the highest level of integrity is maintained for this doctoral exam.”
The department initiates an internal review “whenever there are allegations of misconduct,” according to a follow-up statement.
Six of the seven Harrison sergeants took the test Oct. 16 and then discussed the answers with one another — but one remaining sergeant didn’t take the test until two days later, sources said.
Some officers believed the test was compromised because the other sergeant may have had access to the answers before taking the test, sources said.
The sergeant who took the test after the rest had received a disability designation from the state, a county source said, so he took the test on a different day.
Some raised their concerns with department heads, and in November a formal complaint was filed with the county’s human resources department, which administers testing for local police departments. The matter was referred to the DA office, which found no criminal wrongdoing.
If the test is given again on October 22nd, all seven candidates will take the test on the same day.
The NYPD is now grappling with similar claims made for its sergeant’s test this week, with allegations that test-takers gave answers on day one to people who took the test a day later.
