Many consider Star Wars 1313 to be the best Star Wars game never made. The debut trailer from 2012 still inspires conversation a decade later, and fans continue to hold out hope that it’ll be produced. Fortunately, we got to know a little more about what could have been with a leaked video showing some in-development gameplay featuring Boba Fett.
What Would Star Wars 1313 Have Been Like?
The Vault, a YouTube channel dedicated to the canceled Star Wars Battlefront III, released what seems to be a behind-closed-doors look at Star Wars 1313. This video features two clips featuring Boba Fett.
The first clip takes place in a market in the underbelly of Coruscant. This area seems fairly complete, and the amount of NPCs, lighting, and effects are impressive for a late-PS3/Xbox 360 or early PS4/Xbox One title. Unfortunately, there’s no context for what’s happening, but we can assume that Boba Fett is looking for a mark.
The second clip is more action-packed and has Boba Fett chasing a bounty. This has him running through an industrial area on Coruscant, which is much earlier in development than the marketplace we saw earlier. The gameplay is reminiscent of Uncharted, and it looks like Star Wars 1313 would have tried to recreate the cinematic gameplay found in that series.
Despite the hype, Star Wars 1313 had a troubled game even before Disney came in and gutted LucasArts. It started as a tie-in to the Star Wars: Underworld TV series, and when that was canceled, it was refocused to the game we saw in the 2012 E3 trailer. The game was reportedly supposed to be an open-world title until sometime in 2011 or 2012. However, when George Lucas saw the game, he loved it and asked for major changes to include elements from the canceled TV show’s scripts. So, when we saw the trailer that blew everyone away at E3, everything in it had likely already been scrapped.
In its final form, Star Wars 1313 was to be an origin story for Boba Fett set between the prequel and original trilogies. Unfortunately, in 2013 Disney shelved all titles in development at LucasArts. Given the gritty, adult tone 1313 was going for, it’s unlikely we’ll ever see the game as it was originally envisioned as that goes against Disney’s vision for the franchise. Fortunately, thanks to videos like this, we can at least catch a glimpse of what could have been gaming gold.
