The mission is being carried out by ULA in partnership with Celestis, a company that provides space memorial services.

This first Vulcan mission was named “Enterprise”, in honor of the famous Trek star ships.

The rocket will also carry 150 capsules containing the cremation (or DNA) of Trek or space aficionados, including that of the series’ creator, Gene Roddenberry.

“We are delighted to fulfill, with this mission, a promise I made to [actor] Majel Barrett Roddenberry in 1997 that one day we will fly her and her husband/Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry comes together on a deep space memorial flight,” said Charles Chafer, CEO and co-founder of Celestis. in a statement.

Celestis had previously launched Gene Roddenberry’s ashes into space on an Orbital Sciences rocket in 1997.

ULA President and CEO Tory Bruno called the mission a “fit tribute to the Roddenberry family and Star Trek fans for being a part of Vulcan’s maiden flight. ”

However, the Vulcan not only went to space to kick off “Star Trek” content, it also carried Astrobotic’s Peregrine lunar lander.

The rocket will first deploy Peregine in orbit to the moon and then into deep space with a memorial payload.

Once in deep space, Vulcan is expected to enter a stable orbit around the sun.

The rocket is expected to launch sometime in the second half of 2022, however, the exact timing remains unclear at this point.
