New mural on Travis Street in downtown Houston shows solidarity with Ukraine

HOUSTON, Texas – As a proud Ukrainian living in Houston since 2008 and whose family fears for her safety every day in her home country, Iryna Petrovska Marchiano spares no words for Russia and even proposes a boycott here in the Lone Star State.

“Every drop of Russian oil that comes into this country is tied to a drop of Ukrainian blood,” she tells CultureMap. “And I’m not sure the Texans want to put that in their tanks.”

Defiant and not content with simply checking on family daily (her cousin in Ukraine lost two friends to the siege) or watching the news, Marchiano commissioned a downtown Ukrainian peace mural, located on Travis 112 St. (the old Toc Bar). , which increase attention. Adorned with the hashtag #StandwithUkraine, the mural, created by local artist Shelbi Nicole, is a simple, giant heart in the colors of the Ukrainian flag.

Marchiano has also launched a website called HTK for Ukraine. The website contains information on how Houstonians can help Ukraine.
