MUNISING, Mich. (WJMN) – Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore will begin charging admission starting March 1, 2022; Camping and lighthouse entrance fees will increase on January 1, 2022.

Adding entrance fees and increasing fees for camping and lighthouse tours were proposed earlier this year and presented for public review and comment. Public comments collected on a park website are generally positive according to a PRNL bulletin. Residents are supported to use the fees collected for park renovations that are directly related to visitor enjoyment, access, and health and safety, as required by policy and law.

“The new fee will provide much-needed funding for the renovation of the park,” said National Lakeshore District Superintendent David Horne. “We are very grateful for the support we received during the public comment period.”

The basic operations of the park are funded by appropriations directly from Congress, but recreation fees are used to support the ongoing maintenance of park facilities and new projects that directly enhance visitor experience. Some of the projects may include trail improvements, camping facilities, visitor centers, park resource monitoring, and development of the area for future public use in addition to funding sites. seasonal employment.

PRNL maintains 63 country campsites, 14 backcountry campsites, more than a dozen historic structures, 100 miles of trails, as well as roads, parking, restrooms, and systems. water system, bridges and 86 park buildings. The new entrance fee will be phased over a three-year period.

The changes take effect January 1, 2022

  • Camping Fees at Campground at Little Beaver Lake, Twelvemile Beach, and Hurricane River: $20-$25 per night per site
  • Au Sable Lighthouse Tour: $5 per person
