Nancy Pelosi’s spokesman on Monday accused the media of misrepresenting a video showing the House Speaker “pushing aside” the baby daughter of a GOP congresswoman — and insisting the top Democrat was merely trying to ensure that the little girl “will not be hidden”.
Texas Rep. Mayra Flores filed the charges against Pelosi late Sunday after footage captured at last week’s congressman inauguration ceremony was shared by conservative commentators on social media.
“It is sad to see that ‘news outlets’ who know better are misrepresenting the spokeswoman’s efforts to ensure Rep. Flores’ daughters are not hidden behind her in all the photos of such an important moment for her family said Pelosi’s Deputy Chief of Staff, Drew Hammill, wrote on Twitter.
The announcer then doubled down and shared additional footage of what he said of Pelosi “graciously greeting the children of Rep. Flores and telling them about the room they are in.”
Flores had retweeted the footage Sunday night he wrote: “No child should be pushed aside for a photo op. PERIOD!!”
“I’m so proud of my strong, beautiful daughter that I didn’t let that bother me,” Flores added of the photo op. “She kept smiling and posing for the picture like a queen.”
The video in question showed Pelosi standing next to Flores’ daughter as the announcer motioned to the family’s pastor for a photo during the swearing-in ceremony.
Pelosi could be seen looking down at the girl and stretching out her elbow as the child crawled over.
Although it is not clear from the footage whether Pelosi’s elbow touches the girl, some conservative commentators accused the speaker of elbowing Flores’ daughter.
“I love that this princess stood her ground while Nancy showed her true colors,” actor James Woods tweeted.
TV host Benny Johnson tweeted, “Nancy Pelosi ELBOWS, the baby daughter of new GOP Congresswoman Mayra Flores – what a witch.”
