Mystery as high school senior’s body found in Mexico 2 years after mom says he was kidnapped and beaten for ransom

The body of a teenager was found in Tijuana almost two years after he was kidnapped. Miguel Anthony Rendon, 19, crossed the border into Tijuana to visit his mother in May 2020.

Over two weeks later, the teen returned to Tijuana to visit his girlfriend and surprise his mother, Emma Medrano Gallardo.

But instead of seeing her son, Medrano received an urgent phone call around midnight.

“In Spanish they said, ‘Lady, we have your son. We need so much money,” she said.

The mother said she was in disbelief until a subsequent video call confirmed her worst fears.

“My heart almost stopped,” Medrano said. “He was tied up and bloody in the face. He could hardly speak.”

The next day, Medrano’s ex-husband dropped the ransom at the Tijuana border while she waited for her son elsewhere, as ordered.

“It was awful. Every minute was like days,” she said.

But despite waiting more than six hours, no one came. Medrano said it was an ongoing heartbreak.

“I hoped every day to get a call, but we never did,” she said.

The kidnapping was reported to Mexican authorities and the FBI, Medrano said, and she conducted multiple searches for her son with the help of nonprofit organizations.

“In that moment it was like my hope was gone, but it was finally a relief,” she said. “I’ll get him back and I’ll know where he is.”

The mother says she has no idea why her son was targeted. Miguel was an athlete and a senior at Hoover High School in San Diego. He was due to graduate this spring and planned to enlist in the Marines.

“He was always smiling, funny. He had learning disabilities and was in a special education, but he had goals and now he won’t be able to live his life,” Medrano said.

She hopes justice is done for the tragedy “so they can’t do this to anyone or to other children.”

A GoFundMe was founded by Miguel’s family. The teenager is described as “a pillar in his coming” who constantly shows love for his mother and only wants the best for his siblings.

“Let’s come together to help shower his family at this time of unimaginable loss,” the page reads.
