Experts have discovered a rare stone in Scotland engraved with startling symbols.
The marks are believed to have been left by indigenous people who lived there around 1,500 years ago.
Three oval shapes, a comb and a mirror, a crescent moon and double discs can be recognized on the 1.7 meter long find.
But archaeologists are scratching their heads over what the symbols actually mean.
The Picts were a group of people who roamed what is now northern and eastern Scotland in ancient and medieval times.
Experts were moved to tears after the stone was found in Aberlemno, as only 200 have been excavated so far.
And it was unexpectedly stumbled upon, since at that point the team was only examining a pawn’s square.
“We thought we’d uncover a little bit more before we head out into the day,” said researcher Dr. James O’Driscoll.
“We suddenly saw a symbol. There was a lot of screaming.”
“Then we found more symbols and there was more screaming and a little bit of crying.”
What is particularly strange is that the symbols appear to overlap, suggesting that they were carved at different times.
“Only about 200 of these monuments are known,” added Professor Noble.
“They are occasionally dug up by farmers plowing fields or building roads, but by the time we can analyze them, much of their environment is already disturbed.”
“To find something like this when digging a small test pit is absolutely remarkable and none of us could quite believe our luck.”
