‘My heart was broken’: Nadhim Zahawi praises Will Smith for apologizing after beating Chris Rock at Oscars

A British minister has praised Will Smith for apologizing after he slapped presenter Chris Rock at the Oscars over a joke about his wife.

Nadhim Zahawi, the education minister, said his “heart was broken” when he saw the “tearful apology”.

“It’s heartbreaking when you lose control of your emotions in this way, but I think it’s important not to allow yourself to cross that line and he immediately apologized, which is good to see,” said he told BBC Breakfast on Monday.

Smith appeared to take offense at a joke Comedian Rock made about Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved haircut. His wife has spoken out about her struggles with alopecia and said it prompted her to shave her head.

The actor went on stage and punched the presenter, causing confusion in the audience. He yelled, “Keep my wife’s name out of your damn mouth.”

Smith later used his Best Actor acceptance speech to apologize to the Academy and “all my fellow nominees” for the incident.

Britain’s Education Secretary was asked on Monday what he would say to the schoolchildren who witnessed the beating at the star-studded ceremony.

“I would say don’t do it. And you could see Will Smith – and my heart broke when I saw him, that tearful apology. He immediately apologized,” Mr Zahawi said.

“It was tough for him because it was someone making fun of his wife and her illness.”

He added: “It’s not easy. But he regretted it and he immediately apologized. “
