On the night Maddy was slashed, Hughes insisted on getting in the car with her after her cousin picked her up.

But Maddy said: “After an agitated phone call, he decided he wanted to go down to Colwyn Bay to meet a guy for a fight.

“I kept telling him we weren’t letting him go but he became aggressive and abusive towards my cousin so he agreed to release him just to be quiet.

“When we got to Colwyn Bay, we saw the guy he was going to fight, along with several other people and he insisted that we keep driving because he was scared to get out of the car.”

“His attitude and behavior scared me.

“Kelly refuses to leave the car unless I go with him and pull a machete from his pants.

“I was with him all night, and I was shocked beyond words when I saw it.”

She tried to take the weapon from Hughes’ hand, but Maddy got two deep breaths into her hand.

She said: “The knife was about a foot long and cut through my hand like butter. I could have lost the ability to use my hand and Kelly doesn’t seem to regret it at all.

“After the incident, I was very worried when I moved suddenly and had pain in my hand.

“I had nightmares and had panic attacks.”

Hughes called her the next day and offered money to withdraw her statement, but Maddy recorded the conversation and gave it to the police as evidence.

“Obviously he only thinks about me,” she said.

“I was scarred for life and possibly lost my hand, but all he could think about was escaping with impunity.”

Hughes, who has ADHD, was sentenced to 14 months for unlawful hitting and two months for attempting to break the law.

But he was released immediately after eight months in detention.

Her Honor Judge Saffman told Hughes: “You did not mean to cut Mrs. Brown’s hand.

“It’s “intentional recklessness”.

The judge issued a five-year restraining order to prevent Hughes from contacting Maddie or recommending her on social media.

But Maddy said she was “deeply disappointed” by the statement, adding: “Knife crime is the worst offence, but it’s even worse when someone intentionally goes out with a child knife,” she said.

“Now he’s back on the street.”
