ONE Islam A man was investigated by the FBI for posing as a radical Orthodox Jew to marry a Jewish girl, then claiming to be a US spy to hide his tracks.
Eliyah Hawila, 23, real name Ali Hassan Hawila, has just married a Syrian Jewish woman from Brooklyn, New York named Sally, whom he met on a Jewish dating website .
Hawila says he became interested in the Jewish religion as a teenager living in rural Lebanon. He had hoped to convert when his family moved to the United States in 2015 but was turned away from his local reform community in Houston, Texas, he told The Age of Israel.
Then he decided to start saying that he was a Jew.
During his time living in Texas, the 23-year-old learned enough Hebrew to recite Jewish prayers, study the Torah at a local Chabad, and build an intricate backstory of origins. Jew his mistake.
He even told his daughter-in-law about his ancestry, giving him pseudo-Ashkenazic names including Meyer Lansky, the name of a former Jewish gangster.
Two weeks after getting married in New York, the bride’s family discovered suspicious documents belonging to Hawila, including a Lebanese passport with a different name.
The discovery then led him to lie to his bride, telling her that he was a US spy for the National Security Agency.
“When she saw the ID, I had to do something, so I told her, you know, this is the NSA ID, that I was on a mission, stuff like that, I just made it up. out something,” Hawila told the Times of Israel.
The bride’s father did some digging, and contacted Hawila’s father, who told him his son was not Jewish.
“So I started making more and more things, I… I… I was panicking, and they took her away from me, they took her away from me,” Hawila said.
Hawila was later investigated by the FBI amid growing concerns that he might be working for a terrorist group trying to infiltrate the Jewish community. Hezbollah has its headquarters in southern Lebanon.
“When the FBI agent came to me, I said, ‘Sir, I give you permission to track all my phone calls, I’m not affiliated with anyone,’ he told Kan TV.
The FBI has yet to find evidence of Hawila’s involvement with any terrorist organization.
Hawila insists his connection to Judaism was not fleeting. He also said that he never intended to hurt his ex-wife, Sally, whom he said was the love of his life.
‘If she wants to give me a second chance, she can give me a second chance, if she doesn’t want to, I still can’t blame her. But I wanted her to know she was the love of my life,’ he said.
Even if Sally forgives him, the rules of her Orthodox community will not allow her to marry a convert.
Hawila also hopes to get a second chance, if not with Sally, with the religion he worships.
“I just want to convert and I want to live a Jewish life,” he said.
Sally, who is believed to have been moved to a safe house during the FBI investigation, declined to be interviewed, according to the Times.
