The body of a boy believed to have died within the past week was discovered by a mushroom picker in the Indiana woods on Saturday, state police said on Sunday.
The collector came across the body near a road in a heavily forested area of eastern Washington County around 7:30 p.m. Saturday night, Indiana State Police said in a statement.
The resident immediately called 911 and the Washington County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene before state police were called to investigate.
Police described the child as a 4-foot-tall black boy between the ages of 5 and 8 with a slim build and short hair.
No official cause of death was given pending an autopsy, police officers said. No further details have been released at this time.
Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the child. Those with information are asked to contact the Indiana State Police in Sellersburg.
“There’s someone at an Easter table this weekend who might have someone who isn’t there who was expecting to come,” Sgt. Carey Huls told The Associated Press. “There’s family, friends, maybe someone from school who knows there might have been issues, who thinks this could possibly be that kid.”
