Museum School senior Ethan Maddi opens up about Chelsea brick attack

A Chelsea teenager says he still has no idea why a complete stranger walked up to him and hit him with a brick – and he doesn’t even remember the thug who attacked him.

“I went to school on Monday,” Ethan Maddi, 18, a Museum School senior, said Thursday. “I don’t remember the first half of my day. I woke up in the hospital…I have no memory of him.”

“I’ve been in fights before, but you don’t expect that,” Maddi said. “It’s kind of a cheap shot. When I looked down he caught me. I looked away on the second. I said nothing to him. I was just reaching for my lunch in my bag.”

Maddi was sitting on a stairwell on West 20th Street around 11:30am Monday when his attacker – who is still at large – approached him and punched him in the face.

Maddi suffered multiple facial injuries and was taken to Lenox Hill Health/Plex.

Police later released surveillance photos of the brazen brute, showing him picking up the brick from the sidewalk before smashing the teenager.

“He broke my eye socket, the thing that holds my eye socket,” Maddi said. “He also ruptured my left sinus here. It connects my nose to the orbital.

“I was bleeding from my brain when they found me, so it could have been really bad if they hadn’t found me sooner,” he said.

Maddi, an aspiring rapper who goes by the name Zetain, lamented the rise in random attacks in the city, calling the wave “really wild”.

“It’s ridiculous,” he said. “I feel like there are people who need help and people need to seek out those people without expecting those people to seek the help they need. If they’ve committed a crime, lock them up. If they go insane, they need help.

The attacker is still on the run.

“That’s my place too,” he said of the stairs where he was attacked. “All my friends who know me know I’m sitting there. It catches you off guard.”
