MSNBC host Tiffany Cross says white people don’t understand Will Smith’s slap in the face

An MSNBC host said over the weekend white Americans should “sit it out” amid controversy over Will Smith beating stand-up comic Chris Rock during last week’s Academy Awards.

Tiffany Cross, who hosts a weekend talk show on the left-leaning cable news network, interviewed actress Yvette Nicole Brown and TheGrio columnist Michael Harriot on Sunday.

Harriot claimed the Smith Rock incident was an example of “how black people treat each other” in a way that white people don’t understand, “even though it happened to everyone.” [watching the ceremony].”

Brown chimed in, saying, “On Twitter, a lot of us were like, ‘You’re all holding out for your protection,’ because if we need to have a conversation, we’re going to have it.”

“Some people use their words, some people use their hands. It is what it is. In the black community, we understand that,” Brown said.

Brown later added that “violence is [not] the answer” and all three convicted Smith.

Cross then interjected, saying she would “try to put this in context as best as possible for our white compatriots.”

“In really, really black America, there’s a commonality between all of us,” she said.

“If we went to a white guy’s house and it was their family dinner, we would sit at the table and the mother would back off and hit the father and everyone at the table has an opinion,” added Cross.

“When I step in as a guest in this house and say, ‘Yes, you guys are terrible,’ everyone says, ‘I’m sorry. When did you get an opinion? This is our family table,” she said.

“That’s what this moment felt like for a lot of us. There is a nuance in what happened.”

Smith resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Friday, facing possible suspension or expulsion from the organization for his Slap of rock on stage.

Smith said in a statement he would “fully accept any consequences for my conduct” that would be imposed on him by the Academy’s Board of Governors.

“The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, everyone present and the global audience back home,” Smith said in the statement.

Rock was reportedly encouraged to press charges against Smith when the LAPD showed up at the Dolby Theater after the attack, but the comedian declined.
