the previous Celtic Forward felt a tug on his arm from Creswell as he made his first touch and decided to hit the deck.

Referee Felix Zwayer showed the Hammers left-back a red card because the incident was treated as a denial of a goal-scoring opportunity.

After the decision, cameras captured Dembele with a wink west ham were reduced to ten men.

However, David Moyes’ side managed to regroup and even took the lead seven minutes into the second half.

Jarrod Bowen put his right foot on target, which was deflected into the back net by Jerome Boateng.

West Ham defended resolutely but were ultimately nullified by a Tottenham borrower.

Tanguy Ndombele started the Lyon move with an incisive through ball before finally capitalizing on a mix-up between Alphonse Areola and Ryan Fredericks to score.

Asked about the red card decision after the 1-1 drawBowen told BT Sport: “I thought it was cheap if I’m really honest.

“I only saw it in real time, I didn’t look back. It looked like he was walking away from the gate and it’s a tiny touch on the arm.

“The referee made his decision and we had to think quickly with 10 men. I thought we did well and yes we conceded a goal but with the quality they have. It’s all to next week to play.”

Moyes reacted angrily when Zwayer pulled out his red card.

But after the game he refused to risk further punishment by commenting on the officials’ performance.

He said: “The only thing I’m going to say is that the tackle on Jarrod was a foul, so I assume that gets traded.

“That’s the disappointment for me.”

On Zwayer, he added: “I’m certainly not going to talk about the referee.”
