Lawyers for Young Thug, who was arrested this week on charges of co-founding a violent street gang, filed an urgent motion on Friday to demand bail for the Atlanta rapper, calling his prison conditions “inhuman.”
The actor, whose real name is Jeffery Lamar Williams, was arrested Monday at his home in Atlanta. He is one of 28 people charged with racketeering in Fulton County, Georgia. Prosecutors say the gang committed multiple murders and shootings over about a decade.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that the bond application was filed Friday. In it, Young Thug’s attorney, Brian Steel, said his client had spent the past four days in isolation “as if he were a forgotten person alone in the world,” according to that and other local news reports.
The application claimed the overhead light was on 24 hours a day, preventing Williams from sleeping, the newspaper reported. Williams’ attorneys also said he is being served “inedible” food and not being given the opportunity to exercise, shower or interact with anyone other than his attorneys.
Williams remains being held in the Cobb County Jail while awaiting a bail hearing in Fulton County Superior Court.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis announced the charges Tuesday. Prosecutors say Williams and two others founded Young Slime Life, a violent criminal street gang commonly known as YSL and linked to the national Bloods gang, in late 2012.
The 88-page indictment, filed Monday in Fulton County, Georgia, cites lyrics from several music videos as evidence and accuses alleged gang members of committing violent crimes to raise money for the Atlanta gang, promote their reputation and their Strengthen power and their territory. It is also alleged that Young Thug rented a car that was used in a gang murder.
Steel, the rapper’s attorney, previously told news outlets that “Mr. Williams has committed no crime” and he would “fight to the last drop of his blood to exonerate him.”
The indictment also included rapper Gunna, whose real name is Sergio Kitchens. Gunna was booked into an Atlanta jail on Wednesday on racketeering charges. It was not immediately clear if he had a lawyer who could comment on the charges against him.
Among other accomplishments, Young Thug co-wrote the hit song “This is America” with Childish Gambino, which made history as the first hip-hop track to win Grammy Song of the Year in 2019.
