A lifeguard who saved a mother from a flooded car has apologized for pulling her hair to free her.
Nicola Merriman, 44, was swept away by water while driving across a junction near St Clears, Carmarthenshire.
Passed by car driver Dion Burke, 25, who stood on the roof of her car and smashed the windshield with a rock before pulling Ms Merriman through the hole.
She said: “He found my hair and pulled it up. He just kept saying “I’ll be fine”, while he was in so much pain, his hand was covered in blood, it was freezing cold.
‘In the end, all he could say was, ‘Sorry, I pulled your hair.’ Without a doubt, he’s a savior. I’d be dead without him.’
The humble Mr Burke, who was with Nicola’s friend Jacqui Law, 52, when they were alerted to the crash, simply commented: ‘It’s true.
‘You just go in and do it. The way I see it is that you just do what anyone should do. I can’t just sit there and allow it. You just have to get stuck and try your best. ‘
Mrs. Merriman was later treated at the hospital for hypothermia and shock.
Her husband Paul praised Mr Burke and Ms Law for saving his wife, saying they had saved his children ‘motherless in a split second’.
