On December 8, mother-of-two Heather Pingel of Bowler, Wisconsin, was faced with a tragic choice most parents never have to make.
In a strange chain of events, 4-year-old Heather Boy Damion Bernarde fell down the stairs, apparently activating the family dog and it attacked YES! News.
Seeing the dog attack, Heather quickly shielded her son and the dog chased her, instead, severely injuring her and leaving her in dire straits and struggling for life.
Heather’s boyfriend Shane Bernarde came home that afternoon to find her locking the dog in the bathroom with the dog, in critical condition.
“We don’t know how long she was there against him,” said Shannon Pingel, Heather’s sister, according to the report. Wausau Daily Herald. “Shane got home and found her lying on the bathroom floor. She said, “I have no arms and I’m dying.”
The dog continued to attack Shane as he pulled it outside and shot it. Police arrived and an ambulance took all three to the hospital for treatment.
Heather has had both arms amputated and is suffering from kidney failure, while her son has stitches and a good prognosis. Sadly, on December 16th, the brave mother passed away.
The police report revealed that the dog, a pit bull, was abused at its former home and was known to be aggressive, according to WBAY-TV. Shannon added that Heather has a tender heart when it comes to animals in need and believes they can turn the tide to the rescue. dog.
“My sister has the biggest heart for animals and can’t get rid of it… her heart is too big and they think they can fix him,” Shannon said.
“She was an amazing person,” Heather’s cousin, Jennifer Person, told WBAY-TV. “So kind and lovely. She is always there to help people whenever she can.
“Her children are everything to her. She loved them fiercely, as she showed by sacrificing her life for her son to live.”
“She was a great artist growing up,” said Shannon. “I always wished I could draw like her. I will remember how wonderful she was as a mother. She did anything and everything for her two kids.
“She is at home loving her job. And her kids adore her. I will miss calling her and asking when she will be here… because she is always late. I will miss everything about her. “
Shannon also established a GoFundMe to help the family with ongoing medical bills and funeral expenses.
“My sister has 2 kids with her boyfriend,” the site reads. “Yesterday he lost his job and today the unthinkable happened! A dog attacked their son and she did what any great mother would do and sacrificed herself to save him.
“He is stitching very well but nothing serious. My sister wasn’t so lucky, she lost her life to save her sons. She is nothing but a hero. We need help with medical bills, funeral expenses and help raising her 2 beautiful children. She was too young to leave and it was sudden and shocking. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. ”
