Mom of 3-year-old girl shot dead outside daycare wants to flee Brooklyn

The terrified mother of a 3-year-old girl who was hit by a stray bullet outside a Brooklyn daycare last week says the family now wants to relocate “somewhere far from Brownsville”.

“We have to go,” a distraught Avion Bartlett told the Post Monday. “We want to move. Somewhere far from Brownsville.”

But now “we have to go home because we have nowhere else to go,” Bartlett said – while the man who shot her daughter remains at large.

“I tell my husband I don’t feel safe walking into the house,” said Bartlett, a 39-year-old home health worker. “I am scared.”

The woman’s daughter, identified by the family as Tiara Aiken, was walking with her father outside the Creative Minds Family Day Care Center on Riverdale Avenue around 6pm on Friday when she was hit in the shoulder by a stray bullet. The gunman appeared to be targeting another father who was putting his 2-year-old son in the back seat of a car, police said.

Tiara’s devastated father told the Post outside Maimonides Medical Center on Saturday that he was in disbelief at the incident and had no idea who the shooter was.

“I’ve never seen him in my life,” he said.

The little girl was taken to the hospital and was discharged Monday, her mother said.

“She’s playing,” Bartlett said. “She doesn’t understand what’s going on. she knows [it’s] a strange environment, that’s it. She’s in good spirits.”

The mother raged that the criminal justice system allowed suspects to be turned out too easily, including those caught with guns.

“These people, if they get caught, these people, all they do is let them go,” Bartlett said. “People with illegal guns [need] be put away. why [are] her with a gun?

“The police were helpful,” she added. “So far they have found the vehicle the person was driving. They have a strong lead.”

The shooting followed another shooting earlier in the week in which a 7-year-old girl was wounded at Coney Island, also by a stray bullet.
