The accident happened at 9:18 p.m. in front of the McDonald’s on the 1800 block of Fry Road, near Park Row
MPs arrested 17-year-old driver Mohammed Yasin for allegedly drunk driving in the three-car crash. He was sent to the Harris County Jail.
“Reconstruction is still ongoing. From my personal experience I would say this is a very high speed impact and a high speed crash,” said Sgt. Daniel Coop. “That would be consistent in my own experience, but again, the reconstruction will determine the upper, more accurate rate.”
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the driver of a Honda Odyssey was attempting to exit the McDonald’s parking lot when Yasin, who was driving a Hyundai Sonata, crashed into him.
Two other teenagers were in the Hyundai at the time of the accident.
The accident sent the Honda into oncoming traffic across all three lanes, where the car was hit a second time by a Dodge Challenger, investigators said.
The driver of the Honda was trapped in his vehicle, MPs said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Dodge was not injured.
The three teenagers in the Hyundai were taken to the hospital.
A witness said the Hyundai followed her quickly and erratically. After the wreck she tried to help the three teenagers.
“I got the three guys from the silver SUV to sit down. I was looking for the family who had the SUV that was parked in the middle of the street,” Morgan Cummings Jarosek said. “I didn’t go to the other vehicles involved in the accident because they were surrounded by a large number of people, and I didn’t want to add anything to that.”
At the hospital, investigators examined Yasin and observed that he showed signs of poisoning.
According to MPs, the man who originally exited the McDonald’s car park would be held responsible for the wreck, but as the teenager was allegedly driving while intoxicated he is instead held guilty.
The case remains under investigation by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Vehicular Crimes Division.
