Missing, Murdered: The Unsolved Case of Fort Bragg Soldier Jose Juan Melendez Jr.

RALEIGH, NC (WNCN) — On November 29, 2017, Fort Bragg Army Specialist Jose Juan Melendez Jr. was on vacation and made a short trip to Raleigh to meet friends at the now-closed Black Flower Bar near the Peace to go out. But – as the night drew to a close – he was gunned down outside an apartment complex.

After going to a friend’s house on Raven Road at around 3:20 a.m. Specialist Melendez Jr. went to his car to leave and at that moment he was shot. And from that day to this day no one has been arrested.

His father Andy Ramos told me it was difficult.

“There are just no words,” Ramos said.

Melendez Jr. served as the node network systems operator for the 528th Sustainment Brigade. Prior to that, he was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division and served in Iraq and Syria during Operation Inherent Resolve.

His numerous awards include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terror Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon , Parachutist Badge and the Marksmanship Qualification Badge.

“We honor him and always show him respect,” Ramos said.

Not knowing who killed your son is devastating.

“We as a family understand when things haven’t worked out, people have been able to identify the person, there is no video, there are no tools of any kind that could help us solve this case.”

If you have any information about what happened, call Raleigh Police at 919-996-3335.
