BALTIMORE (WJZ) – The Mimi DiPietro Family Skating Center in Patterson Park will soon reopen to the public.
City Councilman Zeke Cohen announced that the ice rink will reopen on Monday, December 27.
“People see it as a real asset to our community and something very important in a very difficult time,” Cohen said.
During the pandemic, the ice rink was closed. And then in the fall, the dome surrounding it was vandalized.
“They were able to tear down an entire section of the outer wall, and so Rec and Parks couldn’t create ice,” Cohen said.
Councilors and neighbors in the area pushed to fix it. The Parks and Recreation Department was able to purchase a replacement but it is still going through the Estimation Board process. In the meantime, the department placed a tarp over the damaged dashboard.
“It’s great to hear that they’re reopening it,” said Lynne Mitchell, a native of Greece who grew up going to the rink.
Mitchell told WJZ that he used to go ice skating at the center every Saturday and is looking forward to bringing his family back to it again.
“I want to bring my grandchildren here and skate again with them,” she said. “It would be three generations of skating here.”
The rink will be open for public skating sessions, Monday through Friday, from 12pm to 2pm. Hours may change after New Year.
While Mayor Brandon Scott suspended all programs run by the Department of Parks and Recreation on December 22, a spokesman said the reopening of the ice center would not be affected by the announcement. this.
Skate rentals will not be available.
