Milly Dowler’s killer asks permission to marry in prison

Serial killer Levi Bellfield is engaged and has requested a prison marriage, the Justice Department has confirmed.
Bellfield has applied for permission to marry a woman while serving two life sentences for the murders of Marsha McDonnell, Amelie Delagrange and Milly Dowler.
Former Attorney General Robert Buckland told The Sun newspaper, which first reported the news, that the proposed marriage in prison was “unbelievable”.
He added: “Milly never saw their wedding day. It can’t be right that he gets his.”
The Sun said he was engaged to a visitor and got on one knee to propose to HMP Frankland prison staff in County Durham.

A Justice Department spokesman said: “An application has been received and is being reviewed in the usual manner.”
However, it is understood that Bellfield’s application is still being processed and is not at a more advanced stage.
The 53-year-old killer would need the warden’s permission to get married in the Category A men’s prison.
Bellfield received a life sentence for the 2003 murder of Ms McDonnell, 19, and the 2004 murder of Ms Delagrange, 22, and attempted murder of Kate Sheedy, 18.
He was already serving that sentence when he went to trial for killing schoolgirl Milly, who was abducted on the road from school to her home in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, in March 2002.
Bellfield was found guilty of kidnapping and killing the 13-year-old after a trial at the Old Bailey in 2011.
