British Gas, which has 9 million customers, confirmed that consumers need to pick up their applications by 8am on Tuesday, January 11.

Requests made after that cut-off point will not be considered and you may miss out on £140 off your energy bill.

The warm house discount runs annually to help needy families with the costs of heating their homes.

The price of energy is sky high nowand set to increase even more This year, so it is essential that eligible households take advantage of financial assistance.

If you’re not a British Gas customer, you can still get a discount through your supplier – but most other schemes are also coming to an end, so you should act fast.

We explain everything you need to know about the British Gas warm home discount, including who’s eligible and how to apply.

What is the warm home discount program?

The Government’s Warm Home Discount Scheme is a one-time £140 payment towards your heating costs.

You will not be sent cash as it is usually paid directly to your energy supplier, after which a discount will be applied to bill.

But if you have a prepaid meter, you will be sent a £140 voucher that you can use to fund your account.

The discount will apply before March 31, 2022, although early payment is possible.

Who is eligible for the warm home discount program?

There are two ways to get a warm home discount, depending on your financial situation.

If you get the guaranteed credit element of retirement credit, you’re part of what’s known as the “core group.”

This means that you will automatically receive money from your bill and you do not need to apply.

People in that group should have been contacted by their provider.

There is also a “broader group” of people with low incomes.

You will also have to meet other criteria, such as asking for General Credit.

British Gas’s deadline for households in the broader group is 11 January.

To receive the money, you must:

  • Get State Retirement Credit savings or guarantees & savings – unless already qualified as part of the Core Group
  • receiving one of the following qualifying benefits means tested:
    • Income support
    • Allowance for job seekers based on income
    • Employment Allowance and Income-Related Support (including a work-related activity or component of support)
    • General credit (low-income factor), and child factor for children 5 and under, child factor or disability or pension premium
  • Have a gross annual household income of less than £16,190 and apply at least one of the following:
    • The account holder is living with a mental or physical disability or illness
    • Account holder is old enough to enjoy pension
    • There is a child living in the home 5 years old or younger
    • You spend 10% or more of your household income on energy bills to heat your property

How can I apply for a discount from British Gas?

If you are eligible for the discount, you should apply directly on British Gas website.

You may need to submit proof to prove you meet the criteria, so make sure you have the relevant documents.

Customers approved for this scheme need to be British Gas customers until payment is made.

That means you shouldn’t switch energy providers until the discount applies, which is before March 31, 2022.

Remember, the UK gas scheme will close on 11 January at 8am, so you need to act fast to secure the money.

You will need to reapply this year even if you have previously benefited from this program.

What other help is available?

If you don’t qualify for the discount or can’t sign up in time, other help is available.

British Gas customers who are having difficulty making their payments should notify their suppliers as soon as possible.

The company has a £2m fund to help late payers of at least £250.

If you are a member of this group, British Gas will contact you directly and then simply apply online by March 31.

Other measures may include:

  • See if you can pay your bill by installment
  • Find a better payment method or fee schedule for you – although this can be difficult right now as there are no cheap flat rates on the market.
  • Advice you how to reduce energy use
  • Free installation pay as you go by the clock at your property
  • See if Fuel Direct can get you a manageable weekly payout straight from your benefits

You can still get a cold weather payment as well as a warm home discount – and this also applies to Gas’s non-British customers.

The Cold Weather Payment is a £25 payment to people claiming benefits when the temperature in their area falls below zero for seven consecutive days between November and March.

We have a Full list of all postcodes confirmed so far eligible for payment this year.

You don’t need to sign up for cold weather payment as it is paid automatically.

But you can check if you can get payment in your area.
