MICHAEL Stone was “greatly encouraged” by Levi Bellfield’s confession as he tried to clear his name, his attorney said last night.
61 years old Attorney Mark McDonald said: “He hopes this matter will be followed up by the authorities as soon as possible.”
Stone is serving a three-year sentence at Durham’s Frankland prison and insists on siding with other cons who believe he is accused of the murders of Lin and Megan Russell.
Bellfield is in the vulnerable inmates unit at the same prison. Stone’s sister Barbara said yesterday: “I hope they will take Bellfield’s statement seriously. My brother is hoping this will help prove his innocence.”
Stone refused to have sex with probation officers because he believed that admitting killing the mother and daughter was tantamount to admitting.
“Because he was protesting his innocence, he couldn’t move forward in the prison system,” Barbara said.
Stone has a long history of violence, but no previous convictions for crimes against women or children.
He previously told The Sun that who killed Russells “should be chained”.
