“Sony didn’t believe in the film because two black actors don’t sell abroad. They didn’t have confidence in it,” Bay said. “I saw James Cameron’s film True Lies, and I was like, ‘Oh my god, this guy has so much money.’ I only have 9 million dollars.
“And they literally turned me off. They turned off the electricity. That’s how rude they were in this movie. Luckily I’ve had 500 days of film set experience doing videos, commercials and working with some of the most famous athletes in the world and that’s when you really know how to handle a***holes.”
Michael Bay
Bay has a few details wrong – the budget was $19 million and Columbia was the theatrical distributor. It’s not far-fetched, however, for a novice filmmaker to get creative in response to a threat to his shoot.
Bay survived the blackout, landed a smash hit, and launched his hugely successful Hollywood career.
