A Texas police officer died from his injuries following a shooting at a local grocery store in Albertsons. On Friday, the Mesquite Police Department said that while answering a nuisance call, the officer was assaulted twice by a male suspect.

The officer is said to have returned fire to the suspect before attacking him once. After being taken to a local hospital, the officer was pronounced dead while doctors were treating him.

Local reports said several Mesquite police officers gathered at the hospital to mourn the long-serving officer.

Mesquite Police Chief David Gill said: “This is a senseless act of violence that has torn a loving husband and father from his family. “He was a good man, a good friend, a good officer. Please pray for his family and ours.”

In addition, some officers coordinated a convoy to transport the remains of the fallen officer to the medical examiner’s office. Mesquite Police are asking for everyone’s support as the community mourns such a tragic loss.
