Memorial Day: Hundreds honor fallen soldiers at the wreath-laying ceremony at Houston National Cemetery

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – Hundreds of people gathered Monday morning at Houston National Cemetery for a ceremony honoring those who lost their lives serving our country.

Houstonians who went to the cemetery for Memorial Day said they did so out of a sense of duty, to honor the men and women who served and those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation.

The wreath-laying ceremony began with the rumble of cannons across the grounds of the cemetery where thousands of soldiers and soldiers are buried.

An American flag hung at every single grave.

The sacrifices of the men and women who have served our nation will not be forgotten, especially on Memorial Day.

From the memorial parade to songs and speeches, those who honored our service members gathered to keep alive the memories of those who died and thank those who are still with us.

“It’s a bit emotional. I’m kind of holding it back because I’m a compassionate person,” said Jimmy Mitchell, commander of the 2nd Division, American Legion of Texas Detachment. “Even though I’m a Marine, I still have a lot of compassion for it. These guys were very close to me, very close.”
