McCarthy promises the GOP will not impeach Biden on “political grounds.”

House Republicans will not automatically start impeachment proceedings against President Biden if they regain control of the chamber in this year’s midterm election, Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said Sunday.
“One thing we learned from the Democrats is that they used impeachment for political reasons,” McCarthy told Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures.
“We’re not going to pick and choose just because someone has power,” he added. “We will obey the law. If someone breaks the law and the consequences become impeachment, we would always work towards that. But we will not use it for political purposes.”
“We’re going to put the facts where the facts are going because America has been through too much with people playing politics with the concept of impeachment,” McCarthy continued. “But if it rises to that level, we would let the law rule.”
Several Republican lawmakers have already called for an impeachment trial against Biden, citing the ongoing illegal immigration crisis on the southern border and last fall’s chaotic troop pullout from Afghanistan.
In September, a group of House Republicans filed an impeachment hearing against Biden. However, the effort quickly died in the Democrat-controlled chamber.

Earlier this year, Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) indicated that there were “multiple reasons” for Biden’s impeachment and said he believes “we will see serious investigations into the Biden administration” if Republicans do the Gain a majority in the House of Representatives.
When asked about the possibility of impeaching the 46th President, Cruz said, “I think there’s a chance.”
“Whether it’s justified or not, Democrats have weaponized impeachment,” the senator added. “They used it for partisan purposes to go after Trump because they didn’t agree with him. One of the real downsides to this is the more you arm it and turn it into a partisan bludgeon, you know, what’s good for the goose is good for the gander.”

The White House blasted Cruz’s comments at the time, with press secretary Jen Psaki saying, “Perhaps Senator Cruz can work with us to get comprehensive immigration reform and take action that will help ensure smart security is what we see.” the border, a more humane approach to the border instead of insults, accusations and future forecasts.”
Democrats have twice voted to impeach former President Donald Trump during his tenure.
The first vote was held in December 2019 on articles of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress over allegations that it tried to pressure Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to announce an investigation into then-presidential candidate Joe Biden. No Republican voted for impeachment.

However, 10 House Republicans voted along with Democrats in January 2021 to impeach him with incitement to riot in connection with the deadly Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
In both cases, the Senate voted to acquit Trump.
